Plaster Workshop

Scratch Coat Plastering Workshop April 15-16 with instructors Kita Glass and Allison Arnold.

Join us to learn how to apply clay plaster to straw bale walls. We will be plastering the interior walls of a new house in Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz. This two day workshop will focus on the scratch coat layer of plastering.

During this weekend we will apply the scratch coat over the straw bale walls.  We will talk about building with straw bales and how to finish the walls with clay from the site soil. A mix of instruction time and hands-on experience will provide you with the basic knowledge of clay plasters and how to mix and apply them on straw bales walls. The goal of the workshop is to accommodate every participant’s interest and skill level. Each participant can expect to participate in the various aspects of the plastering process to ensure the broadest possible hands-on experience. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Our hosts for the workshop are the homeowners, Aerin and Michael Martin. Plaster instructors are Kita Glass and Allison Arnold with guest Michele Landegger. Kita is a contractor who specializes in natural building. Allison is a plasterer and builder as well as the current CASBA workshop coordinator.  Michele is the founder of BOA Constructor Green Building and Design. Michele and her partner, Debrae designed and are building this project. They have been building with natural materials in and around Santa Cruz since 1988.

Cost:  $150 each weekend . *Limited scholarships available upon request.

Accommodations:  Lunch and snacks provided. The workshops will begin at 10 am and end each day at 4pm. There are bathrooms located on site.
